SATA-IO Launches new SATA Express and µSSD Specifications at Flash Memory Summit 2011

SATA-IO recently announced two new specifications targeted at SSDs at the 2011 Flash Memory Summit: SATA Express™ and SATA µSSD™. Together these two specifications provide options for SSD manufacturers to cost-effectively implement high-performance SATA-based storage technology.

SATA µSSD™ offers a high-performance, low-cost, embedded storage solution for mobile computing platforms like ultra-thin laptops and tablets. The specification defines a new SATA standard electrical pin-out using a single ball grid array (BGA). The BGA package sits directly on the motherboard. By eliminating the connector the µSSD specification enables the smallest physical SATA implementation to date, making it an ideal solution for embedding storage in small form factor devices. The µSSD specification is currently available for SATA-IO members, and will be released publicly with the SATA-IO Revision 3.2 specification.

SATA Express, which is currently under development, combines SATA software infrastructure with the PCI Express® interface to deliver high-speed storage solutions for SSDs and hybrid drives. SATA Express will enable the development of new devices that utilize the PCIe® interface while maintaining compatibility with existing SATA applications, providing a cost-effective means to increase device speeds to 8Gb/s and 16Gb/s. SATA Express is expected to be complete by the end of the year and will be released as part of the Revision 3.2 specification.

Both specifications received significant attention following the Flash Memory Summit, generating more than 40 unique articles in industry publications. Visit the news and events page of the SATA-IO website to view coverage of these two announcements, and stay tuned for additional developments and opportunities to get involved.

  • SATA µSSD

Mark Your Calendars – SATA-IO’s Next Plugfest and Interoperability Workshop Set for November 14-17 - Now including a members Welcome Brunch!

SATA-IO’s Plugfest #16 and Interoperability Workshop #11 is scheduled for this November in Milpitas, California. Plugfests are an important opportunity for companies designing SATA products to quickly and easily assess the functionality and compatibility of their products through interoperability testing, while Interoperability Workshops act as a mechanism for verifying both compliance with the SATA specification and interoperability among products in the marketplace.

On Monday of the Plugfest week, SATA-IO will be hosting a Welcome Brunch that is free for all members! Come get some free food and see demos of the latest SATA technology.

SATA-IO Welcome Brunch: Monday, November 14, 10:00 am - 12:00pm
